For the next 2 weeks the 7th grade Social Studies will be discussing different forms of governments that are exercised in Southeast Asia. The students will be assigned small in-class individual/group projects which is an alternative for a test grade.
The Middle East Government Vocabulary: (ALL students were given a vocabulary study guide sheet.)
Democratic: A governmental system in which the government is ran by ALL citizens. So ALL people participate in governmental decision through voting/elections.
Oligarchic: A governmental system in which the government is ran by a few, usually by a small group of people or family. So only these select families or people are able to participate in government decisions.
Autocratic: A ggovernment system in which one person has absolute power or authority. Citizens usually have no participation in governmental decisions.
Theocracy: A governmental system in which religious officials rule the government. Religious beliefsare used to make governmental decisions.
Shariah: Religious law!
Monarchy: A form of government in which there is one absolute ruler. This person inherits his/her power from family members and usually rules for life.
Presidential Democracy: A government system in which there is an executive branch that is separate from the legislature. Has a president that leads the country.
*Note: Presidential Democracy= Usually the leader, has power.
President: Is found in a Presidential or Parliamentary Democracy. The leader is elected or appointed.
Suffrage: One has the right to vote.
Personal Freedoms: Rights that should be guaranteed to ALL people. Ex: Freedom of speech
Parliamentary Democracy: A governmental system in which the power lies in the a body of citizens who can elect people to represent them. Then, those elected by the people make decisions for the citizens. Has a Prime Minister that leads the country.
Prime Minister: Is found in a Parliamentary Democracy. He/She is usually the leader of the government and is either elected by parliament or appointed.
*Note: Parliamentary Democracy=The president has no power. (EX: Public Relations Speaker)
